PHOTO RIGHT: This is Esbjorn, he’s a Maremma, a very reliable guard dog – the turkey’s keeper.  His job is to keep watch over the turkey flock and the predators at bay. He barks at night. Foxes don’t fancy tangling with him. Birds of prey don’t try it on either when a Maremma is on watch.

In the past we have had some anguish over the predations of a varied kinds of raptors including White Goshawk, Powerful Owl, Sea Eagle & Wedge Tail Eagle who would take our turkey chicks. The combination of Maremma guard dogs and electric fencing has minimised the threat from birds of the air.
